The Lost American Dream
—after reading The Great Gasby
Before I read The Great Gatsby, I was wondering why Gatsby is great. Is he a celebrity? Has he made great contributions? I’m trying to find the answer through reading this classic novel.
A great novel is not only a great story, but an insight into the flaws of real life, and so as the great Gatsby. Considered as F.Scott Fitzgerald’s greatest work, The Great Gatsby is regarded as a reflection of America in the twenties, a time of extreme wealth. Actually, I think this book has presented us the truth behind the superficial prosperity which may provoke our thoughts after finished the book.
When I finished the first two chapters, I thought Gatsby’s greatness was due to his extraordinary wealth. As a country which worships wealth so much, it is not strange that many people flatter Gatsby and think he is great. So at first, I considered Gatsby as a successor of American dream. That a man built up from nothing and won the honor is a good example of American dream. In fact, I regard American dream as the fulfillment of personal wealth and social status in the beginning. However, when I read on and referred to some background information, I changed my mind and had a deeper thought.
Gatsby, a typical American dreamer, is reaching something throughout the whole story. Of course here something does not refer to wealth, for he is so rich that even astonishes Tom, the traditional upper-class representative. Actually the writer gives me some hints in the beginning. “Involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.” This is the end of chapter1 and the mysterious green light catches my attention. Green always stands for hope and promise and here, the green light is a symbol for Gatsby’s dream and the hope for the future.
Then I think Gatsby’s dream is to rediscover his past which is in the form of going after Daisy, his past girlfriend. But Daisy is not the daisy he used to know. We can learn from the context that the real thing Gatsby is seeking is the pursuit of equality. His dream was destroyed once because of his poverty and his low-class background. Therefore, when he is rich, he wants to win recognition from the others especially from the upper-class. And Gatsby put the pursuit to the makeup of Daisy. We can learn that Gatsby’s dream has something in common with the explorer’s dream of America and the promise of a new continent. As a nation of immigrants, there are so many people from the world coming here without decent background and social status. The only thing they have is their hope for the future and the energy and craziness they will devote to their future.
In the end, Gatsby’s dream is ruined by his material wealth. Ironically, wealth is what many others consider as the key to work out everything. On a higher level, if we read carefully we will find that the misplacement of his dream that is nothing more than Daisy is fated to fail. In turn, the writer is telling us that America is corrupted because people misplace their obsession with material wealth. Means corrupts the end. The deterioration of American dream that America is becoming a place where morals are left behind and most people are driven by materials is the main factor of Gatsby’s tragedy as well as the tragedy of the whole generation. The orgiastic life and lack of spirituality inevitably lead to the lost future.
“Gatsby believed in the green light, the future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… ”
Future is too far away to imagine and hope is lost. But it doesn’t matter, as a country that believe all man are created equal since its establishment, I believe that they will still keep trying to achieve the real American dream, which real meaning is the pursuit of equality, the belief in the freedom that all Americans have the right to reach their goals through hard work not only the material wealth. It is partly proved by the election of Barack Obama as the nation’s first African-American president. As long as the American dream has not been lost and misread, I still think that more and more people can accomplish their dreams in this country.
